Singer-songwriter Lowry Olafson has written over 200 songs with school students across western Canada, and performed for 50,000 more as part of his popular songwriting program From the Page to the Stage in One Day! When his touring schedule allows, Lowry returns to many of those towns and cities to present an evening Family Concert in a local theatre or school. These shows are entertaining and engaging for a mixed audience of all ages. They also have one special feature. As a highlight of the show, Lowry invites one, and sometimes as many as five songwriting classes from local schools to join him on stage to perform the song they wrote during their workshop – this time, for the whole community.
Preparation for the show
In order to prepare the students for their part in the concert, Lowry comes to the school to rehearse with the students at a pre-arranged time, and works with school staff to arrange logistical details well ahead of time. He can also provide professionally designed flyers for the schools to send home with students to notify their family and friends of the event. Press releases are also sent to local media, including CBC Radio highlighting the student’s involvement and bringing attention to the school’s cultural program.
Benefits
This is an exciting opportunity for the students on many levels. Where numbers permit, additional student singers may be invited to learn and perform their school’s song along with their songwriting schoolmates. Lowry Olafson’s Family Concerts showcase the level of talent and creativity alive in our schools, and demonstrate to the wider community, the value of school cultural programs and the
quality of work students can achieve when given the tools and opportunities. When several schools are represented, they are one of the few events at which competition is replaced by camaraderie. These concerts can be used as fundraisers for the local schools or district cultural programs. Contact Lowry for more information. |
